I have been thinking about writing a blog on this subject for a while now. With what we have all been going through the last few weeks, I thought there is no better time than now. During COVID 19 Lockdown some of you will have been:

  • Relaxing at home.
  • Busy Essential workers.
  • Sense of achievement getting things done at home.
  • Feeling stressed about your employment future.
  • Bored and frumpy, with nowhere to go out too.
  • Hectic and busy trying to work from home with family at home as well.
  • Lonely in self-isolation/lockdown.

There will be many varied emotions at this time, read on, be proud of yourself, give yourself a confidence boost, the dream of getting your nails, hair, lashes done when we are out of lockdown…I know I certainly am!

The Real Meaning of High Maintenance...it's is called the FEEL-GOOD LOOK-GREAT FACTOR!!!

Personal presentation is how you portray and present yourself to other people, age has no barrier to this. Some get it confused with high maintenance. It includes how you look, what you say, and what you do, and is all about marketing YOU, the brand that is you.

What others see and hear from you will influence their opinion of you. Good personal presentation is therefore about always showing yourself in the best possible light.

We all know that you only get one chance to make a first impression. Most of us are probably also aware that it takes quite a long time to undo that first impression—and that if it is negative, we may never get the chance to do so. This blog explains some of the skills involved in making a good first impression—and then continuing to impress over time. I have researched a lot on these topics over the last years and I am very passionate about them. Here is some positive information I have read, learned and have been able to pass onto our clients, whether this is with personal grooming hair and beauty or personal styling. The Real Meaning of High Maintenance...it's called the FEEL-GOOD LOOK-GREAT FACTOR!!!

Personal presentation is about you and how you present yourself to others.

This all starts with; YOU

To present yourself well and confidently, you need to believe in yourself—or at least, be able to act as if you do. People who present themselves as confident will be perceived as such by others. There is plenty of evidence that once we start acting as if we are confident, we generally feel more confident too! Confidence-but, not arrogance- is a very attractive trait. Having a justified belief in yourself and your abilities helps other people to be confident in you too.

Good personal presentation requires good self-esteem and self-confidence. It means that you must learn about yourself, and understand and accept who you are, both your positives and your negatives, and be comfortable with yourself. Improving personal presentation, therefore, requires us to look at several different areas. Improving some basic communication skills and increasing your self-awareness will improve our ability to present ourselves well. Knowing that you are more likely to say and do the right things, and look the part, will help to increase your confidence. All these will, in turn, help to ensure that you give the right impression. This is more important than ever as we head into uncharted waters with the on flow of COVID19. There will be many people looking for new careers, a change of lifestyle and a new direction in life.

Self-esteem and self-confidence

– how you feel about yourself and your abilities.

Self-confidence is believing in or having faith in your ability, rather than yourself as a person. It is almost certainly impossible to overestimate the importance of personal presentation, especially in creating a good first impression, but also in giving a longer-term positive view of yourself.

Personal appearance

– how you look, and how other people see you.

Vicki personal appearance

Personal appearance is the way that you dress and take care of your general appearance. Much as we may hate the idea that appearances matter, this is an important factor in personal presentation. Whether you like it or not, others will make judgements about you based on how you look, which includes how you dress and your accessories. It is therefore worth taking time to think about what messages you are sending to others in the way that you dress.

Non-verbal communication

– your body language, voice and facial expressions, gestures and other non-verbal messages that you use.

Many people are unaware of how they are affected by body language, and how they are affecting others. By being aware of positive and negative non-verbal signals, you can improve your image and the way people perceive you

Non verbal communication, Gestures

Verbal communication

– how you speak and use your words to make an impression. What you say and how you say it are both important aspects of how you are perceived by others.

Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is all about the words thatyou choose. Those who are good at verbal communication understand the impact oftheir choice of words and choose the right words for the situation and theaudience. They are skilled at getting their message across to others andensuring that it has been received.

Behaviour

– how you behave more generally, including politeness and not just how you speak, will leave a strong impression on others.

For example, if you are habitually late, you may give other people the impression that you do not value their time. Good time management skills can, therefore, be helpful in giving the right impression—as well as enabling you to work more efficiently.

“High Maintenance” Things Women Do That Are Actually Pretty Normal. Don’t let other people make you feel guilty about looking after yourself…if you don’t who will?

Personal Stylist Christchurch - Vicki Ogden-O'Fee

The high maintenance label gets thrown at women a lot, and sometimes for pretty silly reasons. Not every woman is the same, and some are lower key than others, but that doesn’t mean that living life a certain way needs a label.

There’s nothing wrong with having a set of standards or personal preference of upkeep, women are of sick of hearing that liking or doing these things makes them unbearably high maintenance: This is simply not true. Looking after yourself and putting your best self forward is something to be very proud of. I call this our “Feel-Good factor”.

Getting our nails done

Loads of women like having their nails done, and sometimes our jobs require us to do so. Either way, it’s annoying when someone makes a comment that going to the salon to get a manicure and pedicure means we’re high maintenance. It just means we feel better with our nails being groomed. It’s that simple.

Colouring our hair

Colouring our hair

Aside from the fact that grey hairs happen, and we want to cover them up with a fresh colour, getting our hair done just feels good, there’s nothing like a fresh hair colour and hairdo to boost our morale. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a woman wanting to do something that makes you look and feel amazing.

Makeup and skincare rituals

Makeup shaming is totally unnecessary. Some women are confidently rocking a bare face when they’re running their daily lives, and some won’t leave the house without at least covering the dark circles under their eyes. Either way, who cares? If a woman feels more confident with makeup, then wear it and stop calling her out for it. Facials and cosmetic treatments are part of life and here to stay. Every woman has a right to confidence, and if she’s not hurting anyone else in her quest to feel it, then I say go for it!

Shopping

Shopping

Excessive shopping and expecting someone else to pay for your high-end taste is one thing, but if you are paying all your own bills and want to treat yourself to a little something extra that you can afford, this isn’t high maintenance, it’s just being a boss woman. Life requires rewards sometimes, and if a new designer dress is a reward you choose, so what...You go Girl!

Wanting affection

Wanting to feel cared about in your relationship isn’t asking for too much, it’s a basic human need for many people, men included. It’s seriously annoying when you feel emotionally neglected and get told that you’re expecting too much. Affection is not just about our partners it's family and friends as well. You never know when you will make someone’s day with just a simple hug. When it comes to love, women want to feel that their partners care for them and that means we want to be hugged, kissed, snuggled, and told we’re beautiful from time to time. This shouldn’t be considered “work.” It’s just a natural desire for many people and it makes us feel loved and secure.

Affection feel cared in your relationship

Liking or desiring beautiful jewellery

Jewellery

Who doesn’t like shiny things? Again, if a woman isn’t demanding someone to buy her the Hope Diamond, there’s nothing wrong with liking beautiful jewellery. Some women like it, and some don’t. I think that most women just appreciate the sentiment, simplicity and memories of what it represents. It doesn’t mean your partner needs to spend a small fortune; it’s just a long-standing tradition among society that a piece of jewellery makes a woman feel special.

Using expensive products and liking the finer things in life

The reality is that as we get older, we need to take better care of ourselves and this includes our skin, nails, and hair. If you buy a $3 or $30 shampoo, it shouldn’t matter to anyone else. Unless we are demanding things in life that we can’t provide for ourselves, there’s no need to call a woman high maintenance for the way she chooses to live her life. Buy the shoes, eat the chocolates, drink the wine!

Enjoying the finer things in life

As a business we offer hair beauty and barbering services, I personally also love helping you with your personal colour palettes, body shapes, wardrobe planning, personal shopping and total image makeovers. I have been in the hair, beauty and fashion industry for 30 plus years and have seen lots of fashions and trends come and go, but some things that never go out of fashion are confidence, class and style. Style and confidence go together, if you are feeling good about yourself and how you look, you will naturally portray confidence. When confidence and style are paired together and are in sync, this is where someone comes across as having their own individual style and this can also be identified as your own personal brand. I would love to help YOU.
