Men’s Grooming

By Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee

At Vj Barbers men’s grooming we are passionate about men looking their best. We have done some research as to what’s on trend in men’s grooming for 2018.

With the rise of social media alongside growing awareness of wellness, the men’s grooming industry has undergone a bit of a makeover of late ones so we take a look at what you can expect in the way of male grooming trends in 2018.

It’s no secret that today’s modern man is more in touch than ever with his grooming routine. It’s a market that’s now worth over $50 billion, so unsurprisingly there’s a lot going on in male grooming right now. No longer associated with being a feminine trait, grooming has become a staple in the everyday man’s routine.

And so, it should be. You could be bang on trend with the latest Instagram shots, but ultimately if you’re not completing the look with an on-point haircut, your kind of shooting yourself in the foot. Whilst they might be more subtle than the sometimes extravagant women’s beauty trends, there are undeniably male grooming looks and specific products that come in and out of fashion.

Skincare Trends
All too often, men’s skincare routines are heavily overlooked. If your wash bag currently only contains a razor and a can of Lynx Africa from Christmas last year, and your idea of grooming is successfully making it to the shower in the morning, then something has gone seriously wrong! These days, there are a myriad of men’s grooming products that have become pretty essential in an ideal grooming routine. Where would you be without your face wash, moisturiser, after shave at the very least? So, hopefully by now you should already have the basics, but there are a couple of products you should be on the lookout for in 2018, moisturiser that cell renewal, a good facial scrub to invigorate skin and remove dead dry skin. At Vj Barbers we have a service menu of facial treatments dedicated to the blokes. Facials need not be taboo. Great skin and keeping a youthful look takes effort. Many men book a facial each month with their cut and style as a regular regime.

Hair Grooming Trends

Thankfully, the time has come that we can wholeheartedly say that the era of the man bun has come to an end. Goodbye, fair well, good riddance we say…who ever thought that was on trend??? It was a look that divided the nation for well over a year, and whilst some fortunate souls could pull off the look to some degree of success, the majority of guys were left looking like a rejected, bedraggled hipsters. So take down that pony tail and fling that hair band into the distance, but don’t reach for the scissors just yet.

Longer hair is definitely having a moment, down at the other end of the spectrum is the shaved look, there doesn’t seem to be much else in the middle – it’s either long, or shaved, but both actually work really well next to each other, bringing a carefree, rebellious sense to 2018 trends.

Luckily for you, these hair grooming trends might not seem completely out of the blue or unattainable, as they’re already pretty predominant on the street – it’s more a contemporary case of the catwalk taking influence from the streets, as opposed to the other way around. So, either grab that conditioner for your luscious locks or reach for the razor to be bang on trend in 2018.

Blading, boxing and fading are huge, when we say the shaved look we don’t mean straight over the entire head with a number one clipper. Fading, boxing and blending is an art, our barbers at Vj Barbers will consult with you for your desired look. Boxing is a term where the facial hair around the perimeter of the face is boxed with a precise line this can be done with clippers or blade. Blading is removal of facial and nape hair using a cut throat blade, where as fading is a seamless blending from no hair to a desired length. Choose a specialist barber and they will give you all the latest techniques with your men’s grooming experience.

Beard Grooming Trends

There are times when having a beard that Father Christmas would envy is on trend, and then there were times where having 1970’s lamb chop sideboards was the only way to go. For 2018 however, the beard looks set to fit somewhere in the middle – it’s less about the size of the beard and more about how you style it. It might seem like the most natural thing in the world, but wearing a beard is a lot more difficult to pull off than you might think. Sure, you can commit to that hipster thing and go full-on lumberjack, but it’s a strong look that you might not fancy all the time. Thankfully, the in-between look for 2018 is one that is set to stick around for a while. Just because you grow a beard doesn’t mean you just forget about it, beards need shampooed like your hair. You also need regular professional shaping; a great shaped beard doesn’t just happen. Beard grooming and line up shaves are an essential and Vj Barbers are expert at these services .A good beard oil will give a truly groomed finish and make you stand out sharp and groomed.

Common Men’s Hair Mistakes

Being Rough with Your Scalp in The Shower
This is a common offence among many guys. We’ve all done it – you’ll be rushing in the morning and end up scratching the living daylights out of your scalp in the shower. It might not seem like this would cause any issues, but you’re actually weakening your hair follicles and, likely, increasing your risks of dandruff – no thanks. Try rubbing through with the palms of your hands instead or gently with the padded part of your fingertips. You’ll find it promotes circulation, and healthy environment for hair to grow.

Using 2-in-1 Shampoo/Conditioner
Ignore your so called ‘good deal’ and invest in a proper shampoo or hair and body shampoo. In order for your hair to be properly cleaned up, the pores in your scalp need to be opened and this is where your shampoo comes in. It helps to get rid of and product or dirt build up .Your 2-in-1 product might be opening and cleaning the cuticles, but it doesn’t handle the closing part which means that ultimately your hair ends up dirtier anyway. Don’t even bother with these products. This is the ultimate bad hair for men offender.

Using Product in Wet Hair

The first downside to this is that water will dilute the product, of course, annoying. This makes it way less effective and can even cause your hair to go all clumpy among other undesirable effects. Unless the instructions specify otherwise, your hair should be at least towel dried before you begin to add any products. This will give you much more control over the product. Even if you’re going for the wet look, let the product do the work. Vj Barbers will recommend the correct product for you and show you the after care you will need to do at home.

The Wrong Hairstyle

Movies, music videos and fashion runways are all guilty of setting men off in the wrong inspirational path for what they think they can pull off. Just accept it guys – some styles just aren’t for you, so don’t get too carried away. Be honest with yourself and when you visit your specialist barber they will be honest with you if you’re totally missing the mark.

Home Dye

The kits are on the supermarket shelves, and the YouTube guides make it look so easy. Want our advice? Leave it to the professionals. Gothic blacks that wash out skin tone and warm tones that actually bring out greys rather than hiding them. These are all classic mistakes that men make when self-colouring their hair. Camo de-grey is a speciality at Vj Barbers Merivale, putting the “Pepper back into the salt” Look years younger in minutes…who wouldn’t want that?

How to Avoid Hair Mistakes

  • Take care in the shower – wash your hair by massaging gently and if using conditioner avoid putting too much conditioner on as it can make your hair greasy.
  • Take it easy with products, less is more, and more will only make your hair greasy.
  • Don’t colour at home – consult an expert and you will have amazing results.
  • Invest in quality shampoo and conditioner – 2-in-1 is a no go, and borrowing your girlfriends is just plain annoying.
