Nowadays having gray hair is not as critical as it used to be. No need to run to the hairdresser to touch up your roots before they show. No covering it up with a hat or an accessory. In fact, more and more younger generations are turning up to salons to have their hair bleached and Greyed. It’s become the fashion statement of the century, to embrace your natural colours and looks as long as that makes you happy. The more authentic you are, the more attractive you’ll feel. This new trend has a financial upside. As long as you’re embracing your grey streaks, you’re not spending as much money to alter them.

On the other hand, whether you’ve just started growing out your grey hair, or recently dyed it, you’ll find that you may need to consider some slight wardrobe alterations to help add a stylish twist to your new look.

Now, no need to lose your cool, you’re not looking at a full-blown closet replacement, just a bit of mixing and matching to find the perfect looks that suit you best.

So what exactly do you need for that?

Identify Your Skin Tone

There is no right or wrong answer here, and these rules are not set in stone. These are merely guidelines to help you pick the most flattering colours to your hairstyle, colour and skin tone.

Look at the inside of your wrist, do your veins look green or blue to you? If your veins are blue then you most likely have a cool skin tone. If they are green, you’re a warmer tone, because blue veins under warmer tones look green.

Now put gold and silver jewellery next to your skin. One of those items will look cheap and the other elegant. If gold seems to suit you more, you probably have a warmer-toned skin, if it’s silver, you have a lighter tone.

Colours

Grey tends to draw attention and catches the eye. So what you need is something to gracefully accentuate that attention, not dim it out. Obviously, there are some individual considerations to take into account, like skin tones and personal tastes. In the meantime, there is a preliminary list of which colours to embrace and which you should be cautious while styling.

One thing that most stylists do agree on, is staying close to your jewel tones, emeralds, amethysts, rubies, diamonds and rose quartz.

Black

Starting it off easy, everyone knows you can’t go wrong with black. Black is such a classic color, that it looks great in any setting. It’s slimming, it’s flattering and the end product is usually an exquisite look with little to no effort. It’s easily paired with any type or colour of accessories, making it adaptable to any event you wish to attend.

When paired with grey locks, it creates a magnificent contrast of colours serving as a backdrop that emboldens the lighter hair colour.

You can complement the colour with a lively blush, or a bright lipstick or accessory to lighten up your palette. Perhaps some white framed sunglasses or a pearl necklace to really bring it full circle.

Green

If you’re looking to add a little bit of drama, you picked the right colour. Green almost always looks great, especially the darker tones. The colour makes the grey on top pop.

Pink

A colour that is highly recommended if you’ve opted for a silver fox look. Hot pink, dusky rose, rose gold or light pink hues. All of these shades work, with varying effects depending on your complexion. Rose gold especially has a nice warm undertone that adds a richness factor to your skin as well as the hair color. A perfect fit for summer and spring outings.

Blue

Sapphire blue is a popular choice, along with navy and bright tones. Denim and dusty blues also work and highlight your newly adapted hair style. The darker shades provide a striking contrast with the silver hair.

Red

This is another colour that you can’t go wrong with. It’s bold, it makes a statement and draws the eye in right away. Red doesn’t have to be limited to your lips and nails, be brave and start mixing it up a bit with cocktail dresses, coats and heels. The most iconic businesswoman and fashion icon, Iris Apfel say so!

Purple, Lilacs and Berry Hues

This is where personal taste and complexion come in. While some stylists are afraid of lighter colours as they believe they give a washed-out effect when combined with grey hair that is not always the case. In some cases, the cool, and gentle colours add a graceful and feminine touch, like lavender and periwinkle. As you move more into the darker tones like purple and rich raspberry you’ll find that the pairing with the lighter hair color conveys an image of power and confidence.

Grey

Grey hair with a grey outfit just works. They work even better when the tones are slightly different, like a white-grey hair tone with a dark grey jumper or coat.

Mix and Match

It’s a lot of fun to experiment with different colors together. Most times you can fall upon a combination that looks striking and yet you never thought it could work.

Pink tops with white bottoms. Denim jumpsuits with bright yellow or mustard cardigans. Black and white patterns and checkered suits. Grey jumpers with navy jackets. Plaid shirts and pants. The possibilities are endless.

Accessories And Final Touches

You’ve got your outfit ready, and your style on point, now you need to compliment the ensemble with just a few small tweaks.

  • When choosing sunglasses or reading glasses stay away from tan frames. The point is to showcase your beautiful hair, so try to match it with strong colours. Burgundy, blue, pewter and white work wonders. Remember that small amendments can make or break your look, so follow your intuition with this one.
  • Experiment with leather products. Don’t stick to the traditional cinnamon brown bags and footwear. Go for more vibrant colours, like pink, white, and dark red. These colours can easily transform a boring outfit to something more fun and youthful.
  • Use statement jewellery. Pieces that are thick and chunky like oversized earrings and bold necklaces. These items draw attention to your face and essentially your hair. The most important thing is not to move too far out of your comfort zone. You need to feel good about how you look so others can see it too.
  • Scarves and shawls are among the most elegant choices to bring an outfit together and compliment the striking colour of your hair. Go for fun and new patterns and textures, especially if you’re wearing a one tone outfit.
  • Don’t be afraid to try on new silhouettes. Elegant A line dresses, tailored jackets with defined shoulder and tight waists, and wide legged jeans with tucked in or form fitting blouses.
  • When choosing your outfit colours, you don’t have to stick to just one or two. Experiment with patterns of mixed colours and prints. Try out different textures together and see how they make you feel.
  • Your makeup doesn’t have to match the tones of your clothing, smokey, dramatic eyes and red lipstick are always in.
  • Consider changing up the style of your hair to something a bit more exciting. Maybe shorten it a bit while adding layers. A long bob looks gorgeous with white hair. Give your hair a rest from heat, and try more natural styles. Most of the trendy looks these days are undone, organic styles.
  • Try to avoid amber, and yellow stones with jewellery. Emeralds, garnets, and rubies are your best friends.
  • There is a practical way if you’re looking to experiment with colours to see which fits best with your skin tone. Try tying different coloured bandanas near your face and see how your skin and hair react to them.

The most important thing is to wear your hair with pride, whether you chose to change the colour to grey, or you just decided not to hide it.

It’s hard to look great in something if you’re not comfortable, so while there are tips that help you choose and add personality to your ensembles, they are not absolute.

Think of these tips as guidelines that help you assemble your dream wardrobe. Just because something is not recommended doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Keep an open mind so as not to miss out on opportunities to look fabulous. If you’re happy with the end result, that’s all that matters.
